The Roads and Transport Authority Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (SBV) is responsible for 360 bridges on federal roads and 281 bridges on state roads. Moreover, the SBV plans, monitors and maintains 116 retaining walls, 88 noise barriers, 66 traffic sign gantries and 10 trough structures. The engineering structures are subject to a stringent inspection system that ensures defects and damage are discovered in good time and that the SBV can react appropriately.

Bridges are a fundamental component of the road network and fulfil various functions. They allow natural obstructions such as waterways, lakes or valleys to be overcome and provide road users with a safe and efficient means of negotiating potential points of conflict at crossroads and intersections. Wildlife bridges mitigate situations where a road divides biotopes or natural habitats of flora and fauna and make an ecologically valuable contribution as part of the road infrastructure.
