The federal and state roads in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have not only to fulfil current traffic needs, they must also avoid adversely affecting people, animals, plants and the climate. This is a complex task with many conflicting aspects to take into account. An extensive range of statutory regulations and guidelines apply to the planning and construction of roads and paths so that their environmental impact, noise and the protection of endangered species receive proper consideration.

Interference with nature and the landscape is a primary consideration when planning all road construction activities. Where it cannot be avoided, the impact must be kept to the minimum necessary, and appropriate compensation measures introduced in accordance with the statutory requirements. The principles for this are set out in the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG) and the Nature Conservation Act Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (NatSchAG M-V).

The management of compensation measures is an important part of the work of the Roads and Transport Authority Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. At the same time, we plan and construct projects to connect biotopes traversed by federal and state roads. For example, these may be pollinator strips sown with wild flowers to support butterflies and wild bees, the design and construction of amphibian tunnels and green bridges, attaching boxes for bats or cavity nesting birds, planting hedges, trees and meadows scattered with fruit trees or returning streams and flowing waterways to their natural state.

Measures such as the preservation and protection of the unique tree-lined roads so characteristic of the region have a key role to play in M-V.
